running stats

On Monday, 7/9, I changed my route so that it is longer and attempted a full 3 miles. I didn’t make it, but I put forth a great effort. 90 degrees and all sun has the ability to do something to the body. Nevertheless, I felt like a trooper running along the main roads. To run from one main street to the next major intersection has a gratification of it’s own. Every time I drive down those same streets, I’m always amazed that I actually ran that far. Although I didn’t make it, I was still excited and determined to do so soon.

Last Wednesday, 7/11, I ran 3 miles for the very first time and it was amazing! It was difficult and I only made it because I wanted to be able to post and say I made it, but I made it! The last 0.3 miles was rough, but I pushed with everything in me. It was to the point where I had to take my headphones out so that I could focus. My goal since then has been to be able to run the 3 miles without it feeling so bad.

I tried the same route on the following Friday, and as you can see, I did not make it. That last 0.4 miles is killer. I believe the sun may have played a role, but it could have been anything. My pace has been rather consistent, so I just have to continue getting stronger and make sure my mind doesn’t get the best of me.

Yesterday, I ran the same route for the 4th time. I knew by about halfway through my run that I was going to make it. I had found a steady breathing rhythm and a playlist that kept me encouraged. My mom also rode her bike with me while I ran and I always tend to do better when she does. The last 0.3 was difficult again, but not nearly as hard as it was when I’ve done it previously.

Preparing for Race Day

The next time I run, I am going to run the route backwards because I believe my mind makes associations with difficult spots on the route. My mind knows where I tend to get tired and when I get to that spot, it tells my body to get tired again. By changing the route, my mind won’t know when to tell my body to get tired (in theory lol). I have about 5 or 6 practice runs left before my race and I am going to try to change my route as often as possible.

The race is in a city about 2 hours from me, so I haven’t been able to practice running that exact route, so I am trying to over prepare. I am going to try to run further and further with each runs so that my body will be prepared for more than the 5k. It is my hope that by preparing in this way, I’ll also be prepared for any distractions that may come about. I’ve never run with a group of people, so I’m hoping that don’t subconsciously throw my pace off. Also, the race is a Color Run, so I have to be cautious about the color flour they’ll be throwing at me while I run.

Another thing I’m worried about for race day is my stomach. I’ve been really good about eating light and pooping before running, but I’ll be driving up that morning and when I’m anxious, I tend to experience some fatigue. I’m hoping that if I eat my banana and drink my performance drink before I get one the road, it’ll be digested and ready to come out by the time I get there. I hope I don’t get any headaches and that what I eat is enough. I am also praying that I don’t catch any cramps, and if I do, I hope they’re the kind I can breathe and run through.

Finally, I need to figure out my running schedule for next week. Don’t want to burn myself out before race day. I’m probably overthinking, but I’M GOING TO BE RUNNING MY FIRST 5K IN 11 DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s been quite the journey! Thanks for all who have been following and supporting me in this.
