Aloneness Vs. Loneliness

Most of us have probably felt that feeling when we’re in a room full of people but still feel alone. The feeling when several people have contacted us, but no is the right person. That void–the feeling that something is missing. Nothing is enough. That is the common concept of loneliness, the sad emotion that tends to slide into our hearts at all of the wrong moments.

On the other hand, have you ever wanted be alone. Those moments of solitude can be referred to as aloneness. Compared to its counterpart, loneliness, times of aloneness tend to be filled with happiness. During these moments, being alone is satisfying. The wholeness you feel with no one else around. For me, these are times well spent with no one other than God. These are beautiful moments where tons peace and simple joys take place. In addition, sometimes it is the battles that we overcome in private that hold the most weight.

Aloneness is choosing to take time to yourself while loneliness involves incompleteness. If you are lonely, it does not matter how much attention you seek from others; they will not be able to make you feel complete. Here’s the thing: We are not meant to be completed by any other human being. We are only complete in God. We should be whole first and others should simply complement us.

Are you comfortable being alone in your own company or do you feel a need to constantly be surrounded by others? When you look at yourself in the mirror are you happy with the person you are or the person you are becoming? Do you really even know who you are or do you feel lost and confused? If you are still trying to figure that out, it could be beneficial to take some time to yourself to learn about who you really are. This could help to eliminate some of your loneliness. Rather than feeling as though your  existence is defined by the acceptance of others, become strong enough to believe that your own self love and approval is enough!

Once you truly love who you are as a person, flaws and all, you will be able to spend time alone or with others without feeling lonely. You will not feel as though you have a void to be filled because you will be filling your void with positive thoughts towards yourself. That emptiness you feel is there because you are not receiving the attention from certain areas in life that you would like. That loneliness is dissatisfaction due to lack of love. But trust me, if you love yourself enough then you will attract love from all of the right places and even in moments alone you will suddenly feel whole.
